Beijing Capital International Airport (PEK), known as “China’s No.1 Gateway”, is the most important, largest and busiest international aviation hub in China. Over the past 50-plus years since its inception in 1958, PEK has enjoyed a steady growth of air traffic. In 2015, PEK served 89.94 million passengers, ranking second among airports in the world for 6 consecutive years, while registering 590,169 aircraft movements and 1.89 million tonnes of cargo traffic. Currently, 97 carriers offer scheduled service at PEK, which connects Beijing with 140 domestic destinations and 129 international destinations located in 64 countries and regions.

Covering an area of 2,441 hectares, PEK is located in the Northeast of Beijing, 25 kilometers from the downtown center. Presently, PEK has three terminals (Terminal 1, Terminal 2 and Terminal 3), three runways (18R/36L, 18L/36R and 01/19) and two control towers. Terminal 1, with a floor area of 78,000 square meters, opened in 1980, and replaced the smaller existing terminal which had been in operation since 1958. With a designed capacity of 9 million passengers per year, Terminal 1 serves the domestic routes of Hainan Airlines and its subsidiaries. Terminal 2, with a floor area of 359,000 square meters and an annual capacity of 26.5 million passengers, was put into use in 1999. Terminal 2 mainly serves China Southern Airlines, China Eastern Airlines, SkyTeam members and Hainan Airlines’ international flights. The construction of Terminal 3 started on March 28, 2004, and completed after three years and nine months with high quality and fast “Chinese speed”. Covering an area of 1,001,000 square meters, Terminal 3 is designed to handle 47 million passengers per year, as the operational customers with humane and personalized service with innovative, smooth, efficient, safe, comprehensive, leading-edge IT infrastructure, setting a new benchmark of smart airport. In terms of green airport, PEK’s absolute impact on environment will reduce in a sustained manner, meeting the environmental protection level of first-class airports. PEK’s airfield covers an area of 13,680,000 square meters, with 132 gate stands and 231 remote stands. In the next 5 years, 34 additional remote stands will be constructed
to complement the airfield resources.

Thanks to the joint efforts of nearly 100 organizations operating at the airport, PEK registers rapid increase in terms of the passenger satisfaction. In 2015, PEK scored 4.94 in ACI’s Airport Service Quality Survey and was awarded the second best airport in the Asia-Pacific Region and the second best airport with annual passenger throughout above 40 million.

With regards to development plan, PEK has been committed to developing itself into a hub airport, smart airport and green airport by 2030.In terms of hub airport, PEK and Beijing New Airport which is expected to open in 2019, will achieve collaborative operation featuring two air hubs in one city, and the air traffic in each airport will come out in front among world airports. Aimed at building an “airport city”, PEK is striving to achieve win-win development with Beijing municipality, contributing to the development of Beijing as a “world city”. PEK will also build up its capacity of opening up to the outside world to achieve world-class airport standards and become an influential large international air hub.
